Authority and Self-expression in Rebel without a Cause and Shadowboxing - Literature Essay Samples

â€Å"Rebel Without A Cause†, a 1955 film directed by Nicholas Ray and Shadowboxing, an autobiographical fiction by Tony Birch, depict the lives of teenagers as they attempt to find their place in the world. Despite the differing settings, 1950s middle-class America, and the lower class society of 1960s Melbourne respectively, both texts explore the conflict between authority and self-expression. Both texts discuss the role of school, suggesting its seeming irrelevance to teenagers and depicting teachers’ failed attempts at maintaining authority. Police authority is depicted in Shadowboxing as uncaring and out of touch with the needs of the lower classes while â€Å"Rebel Without a Cause† suggests that police authority is important to some extent. While in both texts, misguided attempts to express oneself, in the cases of Buzz and Charlie, lead to tragic outcomes, it is questionable whether adherence to authority would have offered a sustainable alternative. By t he end of both texts, the two protagonists, Jim and Michael, have found, what seems to be portrayed as acceptable ways of expressing themselves. For Jim, this involves adherence to higher moral motives such as courage and honesty. Michael is portrayed in a less heroic light, but Birch suggests that Michael is expressing himself in the best way when he is caring for those around him. Both texts contend that using self-expression to discover principles you believe in, such as bravery and honour in the case of â€Å"Rebel without a Cause†, and compassion and empathy in the case of Shadowboxing, and incorporating these traits into your character, is far more important than adhering to traditional authority. Both texts discuss school’s irrelevance and its connection to disrespect of school authority. In â€Å"Rebel Without a Cause†, during the excursion scene, the monotone voice of the planetarium presenter provides a contrasting backdrop to the excited expression an d sudden movements of Plato as he sees Jim, the relaxed voice of Buzz, as he mimics â€Å"a crab†, and the general animation of the characters, as Jim embarrasses himself by â€Å"mooing†. This contrast gives the impression that the teenage protagonists are preoccupied with objects of more immediate interest and relevance than the â€Å"planet Earth and its demise†. It seems that the school’s inability to provide relevant content for the students is responsible for the teachers’ difficulty in commanding respect. Directly after the presentation, the students walk out while their female teacher repeatedly begs, â€Å"Can I have your attention please†. This teacher is then made the butt of a joke, by exclaiming, â€Å"oh, what the heck†, suggesting that Ray intends for the audience to sympathise with the teenager’s perspective, rather than the teacher’s. Michael’s treatment of the deputy principal in Shadowboxing is similarly disrespectful. When refusing to watch the moon landing Michael yells â€Å"F*** the moon†, and rides away. Similar to Ray’s treatment of educational authority, Birch does not condemn Michael’s actions. Rather, Birch precedes this account with Michael’s miserable return to school which was â€Å"like the return of the dead†, in which â€Å"even the teachers† spoke to him in â€Å"hushed voices†. The teachers’ inability to help Michael through the loss of the accident, or to empathise with his trauma, as represented by his â€Å"drowning† dreams, is not necessarily blamed for Michael’s disconnection, as it is in â€Å"Rebel Without a Cause†. Michael seems to appreciate his teachers’ efforts, â€Å"occasionally faking interest for the benefit of Mr Crow†. However, the incompatibility of school and Michael’s traumatic and criminal history is clear, and it is seemingly this incompa tibility that leads him to miss the moon landing, and chase â€Å"a 1964 Ford Falcon down the river†. In these ways, â€Å"Rebel Without a Cause† and Shadow Boxing both suggests that it is unreasonable to expect teenagers to adhere to an authority that does not consider the needs and preoccupations of the individuals over whom it intends to assert itself. Buzz’s and Charlie’s attempts at self-expression both lead to tragic outcomes, however, this acts to undermine the authorities they chose to ignore. Charlie expresses the fact that he is â€Å"in-love with cars†, and therefore expresses himself by car theft. Reflecting on his death Michael acknowledges â€Å"I knew I couldn’t have stopped himhe loved stealing cars†. While it might be said that adherence to police authority could have saved Charlie, Birch causes readers to question why those from a poorer class would respect the police. Michael relates that the â€Å"copper laughed w hen he told me that the insurance company would sue my parents†. Such a lack of empathy for â€Å"you commission house kids† suggests why Michael and Charlie might have had such a disrespect for the law in the first place. Given his social class, Buzz has no such excuse for disregarding the law, his defence for his dangerous behaviour being â€Å"You’ve gotta do something right?†. However, the phrase â€Å"do something† is also connotative of a career, and by extension an identity, that authorities in his world cannot provide him. Buzz was so intent on forming a satisfactory identity, that he died proving that he was not â€Å"a chicken†. While these characters display the folly of misguided self-expression, they also suggest the uselessness of the types of authority on offer to them, further emphasising the responsibility for authority to help others by acknowledging their needs.By the end of both texts, Jim and Michael seem to have found th eir place in the world, and their respective means of doing this, shed light on Ray’s and Birch’s views on self-expression and authority. In his early teenage years, Michael does not seem focused on self-expression. He admits that he â€Å"loved stealing cars†, but acknowledges that his main reason for stealing the Mercedes was to stop Charlie nagging him. Much of his life seems to be drifting with those around him, as is suggested metaphorically, by the days spent drifting down the river with Charlie. In contrast, Jim is concerned with how he is viewed, as demonstrated by the fact that he can be convinced to do most things if called a â€Å"chicken†. As Michael ages, he realises the importance of family and loyalty, reflecting on his mother saying â€Å"I felt so awful for all I had put her through†. Eventually, Micheal accepts this duty of caring for his family, despite the challenges, as exemplified in his care for his father in â€Å"The Hairc ut†. This act of loyalty and compassion is depicted as Michael’s most worthwhile self-expression. But it is not through any authority that this has been achieved, but rather, through trial and error, and the love of his mother, of Katie, his Grandmother, and Jack. Likewise, it is not until Jim realises the importance of compassion, honesty and bravery, egged on by his horror at Buzz’s death and the realisation that â€Å"we were all involved† and his sympathy for Plato, that the way Jim expresses himself begins to be portrayed as excellent or heroic. In the final conservatory scene, Jim is depicted as the in control hero. It is he who orders the police to â€Å"turn the lights down† and he who reasons with Plato to come out of the conservatory. In this heroic light, he is depicted as more knowledgeable and effective than the police (normally, a source of authority). Shadowboxing contends that expressing yourself, in order to discover what most matte rs to you, such as loyalty and compassion, is far more important than any artificial authority. In a Hollywoodised, whitewashed version of this, Rebel without a Cause† seems to suggest that developing principles such as bravery and honesty should be the ultimate goal of self-expression, and allows you, to some extent, to create your own authority.â€Å"Rebel Without a Cause† and Shadowboxing both contend that self-expression is more important than authority. Both texts suggest that authorities are only worthwhile if they protect the interests of, and are relevant to the lives of those they have authority over. However, both texts imply that ultimately, expressing oneself will lead to more worthwhile behaviour modification than authority. Shadowboxing focuses on self-expression as a means to discover values that are important to you and your loved ones and act upon them whether this is in line with authority or not. Displaying its difference in ideology, â€Å"Rebel Wit hout a Cause†, seems to suggest that self-expression is only worthwhile in as far as it encourages individuals to adhere to moral principles such as compassion, bravery and honesty and that this adherence is most useful when done irrespective of authority.

After mercilessly torturing and killing a baby buffalo with his rifle and seeing many more body bags, Rat Kiley finally mutilates himself to get out of war, This whole war, (Noor-Tehrani). Curt lemons death is what began Rats downward spiral out of control. Witnessing your best friend being killed will obviously shake anyone up, however it is different with Rat Kiley because he gives the biggest reaction. This event produces the question, why was Rat the only one who couldnt deal with Curts death or at least keep his sanity after his death. Everyone had dealt with a loss but what makes Rat so special? Why did Rat literally go insane because of it? He was Curts best friend, and this may have been why it had the biggest impact. He was also the medic, so possibly he repeatedly wondered why he couldnt save his best friend. These thoughts going on in his head over and over would certainly make someone go insane. The thought of not being able to do your job and save your best friend would have a lasting, indefinite impact on anyone and this is a key point as to why Rat went so crazy. After his death, Rat decided to write Curts sister opening himself up to her in a letter. This eventually did not go as planned because days and months passed by with no response from the sister. This left distaste in Rats mouth as he just explained to her how his Brother in Arms was killed and how much he meant to him. Rat even ends up bawling in the process of writing this letter because of how heavy the subject is for him (OBrien 64). Soon enough Rat snapped, he began doing very odd things. Later in the book he ends up mercilessly killing a water buffalo, he shoots it once and then continues to shoot it over and over again for no apparent, logical reason. The killing of the water buffalo represents something for rat, the animal represents innocence and then is brutally destroyed. This part in the novel symbolizes Rats innocence being destroyed, it is a very important part in the book representing the timeline of Rats internal struggle. In the book OBrien states that A true war story is never moral. It does not instruct, nor encourage virtue, nor suggest models of proper human behavior, nor restrain men from doing things men have always done. (OBrien 65). Nothing about Rats story is moral at all, he is an example of a mans innocence being tainted. Rat eventually decides he gets to his full limit and ends up shooting himself in the foot to leave Vietnam. This shows just how much of a toll the Vietnam war can take on a man and the lengths he will go to in order to leave that hell. This is an example of Rat being unable to cope with his best friends death and the pressures that war puts on you. It shows that a sane man can be turned insane, it shows that a normal man can be changed indefinitely, and it shows how easy it is to lose your innocence and humanity in a time of war, even for level headed people. This book in a whole highlight the struggles of Vietnam veterans and why they are so different from other generations. A large portion of these soldiers are shown the worst of the worst throughout the war and it makes such a large impact on them for not just the duration of the war but for the rest of their life. The things they see are unimaginable and incredibly violent which will forever take a toll on their lives, and the things they experience are spiritually draining and damaging, and the things they carry are unbelievably heavy both physically and mentally. Rat Kiley was a man of good will and good morals and would of never been though of as to turn crazy and be affected the way he was from the war but he was. Soldiers lose their innocence and humanity in war because of what they see. They lose their innocence because of what they go through and they lose their humanity because of the things they do during the war. They lose their sanity because of the things they carry with t hem for the rest of their life.

Today’s society mainly focuses on the macro level of social structure, for functionalism. Macro means looks at large-scale social processes, such as social stability and change. Macrosociology also has to do with face to face interactions. In glory road, the basketball team goes through a big change, when the first black team to ever play college basketball. In the movie glory Road, the basketball team is mixed between white and blacks. The rest of the league really do not like the change, and they go through a series of events where the team and the coach have to stick together, and keep finding a way to win and not fall apart. When the coach decided to put the black people on the team, some of the white players did not like it at all, but other white players did like having more talent on the team. The white kids that did not like the black players on the team, was because they were worried of the black people taking their spot on the team. Some of the white people did have a good face to face interaction, but a good amount felt threatened. The United States is one of the most developed countries in the world, if not the most developed, yet the U.S. has the largest prison population in the entire world by far. For most of my life I have always believed that the American justice system worked. When people do wrong they need to be punished and pay for their crimes. That is what our justice system is here for so how could is possibly go wrong? Unfortunetly it is not as simple as it sounds and all it takes is a little research to discover why. Before researching the U.S. criminal justice system, I would never have considered the fact that the U.S. has the worst prison population in the world. A documentary on the horrors of American prisons titled, Torture: Americas Brutal Prisons, details how badly prison ers are treated in graphic detail. The documentary shows how prison beatings happen more often than we think and how some are even fatal. This is generally not because of bad inmates, but because these prisoners are no longer treated like human beings. When they are finally released, most of them will be in worse condition mentally and physically than when they were first sent to prison. As a result, they are more likely to commit other crimes and be sent right back to prison. American prisons themselves are considered violent and horribly run. The problem is easy to spot, but solutions are seemingly impossible to implement. Andrew Cohen, of www.theweek.com, stated, Its fairly easy to get judges to find unconstitutional conditions inside our prisons. The hard part is getting government to do anything about it. Beowulf Essay Questions A hero is defined in classical mythology as a man, especially the son of a god and a mortal, who is famous for possessing some extraordinary gift. Beowulf, the title character of an epic poem and Superman, a more modern day hero are both prime examples. Beowulf and Superman exhibit several differences, but they also share some similar qualities. Beowulf possessed great strength that separated him from other men. Being able to use a sword that no ordinary man was able to carry gives the feeling that Beowulf is something more than a human being. It makes him special and causes him to stand out from all other men. Fame is something that makes a hero more noted. Beowulfs popularity had spread all over the world. He never let this go to his head and he never thought that he was better than everyone else because of it. By engaging in this foolish contest, Beowulf nearly got himself killed trying to prove he was better than Brecca. Jealousy is never a good trait, especially for a hero. Reve nge is never a trait of a true hero. A hero has no scores to settle. A true hero should fight only to protect others and not out of his own rage. Also, with Beowulf being a human being, he was not invincible. Beowulf didnt realize this until he fought the dragon. He knew nothing of the dragon, its strengths, weaknesses or powers. Beowulf found out what the dragon was capable of and what its powers were. He knew that it could breathe fire, so he got a shield that would protect him. He planned his attack and thought it trough carefully. He was doubtful about himself and knew that this battle would be his last. Superman, also known as Clark Kent, is one of the most popular modern day hero(not as cool as Batman mind you but relates better to Beowulf). Superman spent most of his time saving people from natural disasters and corrupt businessmen. He would level slums to force the city to build decent housing, and he would use his powers to terrorize munitions makers and evil monsters. When Superman encounters Kryptonite for the first time it first appears as a green glowing substance, which Superman uses his powers on to trace its origin. Superman then pays for his discovery of Kryptonite when Luthor learns to synthesize it, causing it to be a very dangerous threat to superman. Gravity of Earth did not prove to be a good enough reason for Supermans powers, thus they attributed his super-senses to the yellow sun radiation, and his muscular strength, speed, and flight due to the Earths gravity. Due to the new explanation of his powers, Superman no longer had super powers on a world without a yellow sun. Lex Luthor and other villains began to create weapons that used red sun radiation which made Supermans life miserable. During the course of the battle for Truth and Justice, man and sword came together at last. Holding the sword, Superman found himself expanding, spreading across the winds of the universe. The entire history of creation flooded his mind, and his consciousness expanded as he became and all-seeing and all knowing protector. He then released the sword. The sword told him of his greatness, and then headed back into space waiting for him to retrieve it and fulfill his destiny. He had gone from being just one of many super-beings from a super-planet, to being one of the best heroes of the human race (Batman is the best). Beowulf and Superman exhibit several differences, but they also share some similar qualities. In our time, they are both considered to be extraordinary heroes.
